It's been a decade since Sting has had new music in stores. But "The New York Times" says the hiatus will end this fall with the arrival of The Last Ship. The studio project features songs the former Police frontman wrote for his proposed Broadway musical, and some tracks are included in the show.
The album shares its name with the musical, which is based on Sting's 1991 album The Soul Cages. The theatrical production was inspired by the rocker's upbringing in Newcastle, England, a once thriving shipbuilding center that went into decline in the 1970s. The musical tells the story of a shipbuliding family that is suddenly facing uncertain times when the shipyard closes.
The The Last Ship CD is the first collection of new, original material from Sting since 2003's Sacred Love. The album is slated to be released on September 24th.
Sting is currently on the road. The next stop on his "Back To Bass" tour is coming up in Denver, Colorado tonight.
